As packaging engineers, we constantly struggled with manual roll calculations—wasting hours and risking errors. That’s why Sunavin created this free tool: to simplify label roll planning with instant, precise math.

Millimeters (mm)
Inches (inch)

Calculate Roll Outer Diameter

Enter label dimensions, quantity and core parameters to calculate the outer diameter of the label roll

mm
Please enter a valid length
Please enter a valid quantity
mm
Please enter a valid diameter
mm
Please enter a valid thickness
mm²
Calculation Formula

Outer Diameter = √( Core Diameter² + (4 × Material Thickness × Label Quantity × Repeat Length) / π )

Example Calculation

Core: 76 mm (3"), Quantity: 1000, Material: 0.1 mm (0.004"), Repeat: 30 mm (1.18")

Outer Diameter = √(76² + 4 × 0.1 × 1000 × 30 / π) ≈ √(5776 + 3824.9) ≈ √9600.9 ≈ 97.96 mm (3.86")

Note: Results are theoretical estimates. Actual values may vary by ±5-10% due to material properties and winding tension.

Calculate Number of Labels

Enter label dimensions, roll diameters and material thickness to calculate the number of labels per roll

Calculation Formula

Number of Labels = π × (Outer Diameter² - Core Diameter²) / (4 × Material Thickness × Repeat Length)

Example Calculation

Core: 76 mm (3"), Outer: 200 mm (7.87"), Material: 0.1 mm (0.004"), Repeat: 30 mm (1.18")

Labels = 3.1416 × (200² - 76²) / (4 × 0.1 × 30) ≈ 3.1416 × (40000 - 5776) / 12 ≈ 3.1416 × 34224 / 12 ≈ 8959 labels

Note: Results are theoretical estimates. Actual values may vary by ±5-10% due to material properties and winding tension.

Label Roll Calculator User Guide

Welcome! This tool helps you calculate label roll dimensions quickly. Choose between two calculators:

Calculate Outer Diameter (for a given number of labels)
Calculate Number of Labels (for a given roll diameter)

🛠️ How to Use

Unit Selection (Top of Page)

  • Click Millimeters (mm) or Inches (inch) to switch units.

  • All inputs and results will update automatically.

🧮 Calculator 1: Find Outer Diameter

“How large will my roll be with X labels?”

  1. Label Repeat Length → Enter the length of one label (including gaps).

  2. Number of Labels → Enter total labels on the roll.

  3. Core Diameter → Enter the cardboard tube’s diameter.

  4. Material Thickness → Enter the label material’s thickness.

  5. Click “Calculate Outer Diameter”!

Results Show:

  • Outer Diameter (core + labels)

  • Roll Length (total label material)

  • Material Area (visualized in a chart)

🧮 Calculator 2: Find Number of Labels

“How many labels fit on a roll with diameter Y?”

  1. Label Repeat Length → Same as above.

  2. Core Diameter → Cardboard tube size.

  3. Roll Outer Diameter → Enter the full roll’s diameter (core + labels).

  4. Material Thickness → Label material thickness.

  5. Click “Calculate Number of Labels”!

Results Show:

  • Number of Labels per roll

  • Roll Length + Material Area

  • Bar chart of label capacity

💡 Tips

  • Example calculations are shown below each formula.

  • Hover over charts for details (e.g., material area).

  • All fields require positive numbers (decimals allowed).

  • ❗ Red error messages appear for invalid inputs.

📝 Notes

  • Results are theoretical estimates. Actual rolls may vary by ±5-10% due to material stretch/winding tension.

  • Formulas used:

    • Outer Diameter = √(Core² + (4 × Thickness × Labels × Length) / π)

    • Number of Labels = π × (Outer² – Core²) / (4 × Thickness × Length)

Happy calculating! 🎉 If values seem off, double-check your inputs and material specs.
